9mary - ‘I Was Born Backwards’

For any new artist, uniqueness is key. For 17 year old Flo Morrissey it’s her voice. Going by a peculiar alphanumerical mononym, 9mary’s voice has the timbre of Jolie Holland with an accent closer to PJ Harvey - her annunciation slower and more theatrical than both. 

Like many young folk-leaning singer-songwriters, the soul of Flo’s music is much older than her years. She’s covered Tuxedomoon, The Smiths and Appalachian champion Sarah Siskind before releasing her debut EP of original music, Fear No More  - a truly haunting folk record; spectral, dark and guileless. 

The latest track from 9mary is no less sombre, but there are spikes of light. Flo’s choral flickers, almost liquid-y, like a gas-lit flame. It’s nuanced too, layers of varying styles approaching from different standpoints - jazzy American roots juxtaposing ethereal opera are grounded by dewy folk honesty. 

‘I Was Born Backwards’ is a captivating siren song. The kind of song that when you stumble across, though there’s an air of unease, you daren’t but listen.
